PHILOSOPHY OF THE SHOW

We will have a grand and elegant evening, featuring the dazzling beauties of India. Along with Bollywood music and dances, you will enjoy glittering Indian jewelry and gorgeous costumes in our live show.

The Pageant will consist of two competitions, Miss India Connecticut (18-25 years old) and Miss India Teen Connecticut (14-17 years old). Each competition will include a walk on the runway in both Indian dress and Western evening wear, as well as a talent show, and an interview on questions related to healthy living.

This pageant is titled “Beauty from the Heart,” to showcase a new concept of beauty combined with health, through the introduction of special bonus points to the contestants with a healthy Body Mass Index. This new approach to the beauty pageant has drawn a lot of interest and gained support from some of the local physicians and health advocates.

The winners will represent Connecticut in the “28th Miss India USA Pageant” to be held in Florida on November 21, 2009 together with the winners from 26 other states. The winners of Miss India USA, in turn, will represent the US in the “19th annual Miss India Worldwide Pageant” that has been acclaimed as “the most glamorous Indian function” in the world.  Participants in the Miss India Beauty Pageants have gone on to achieve stellar careers in professional fields and have also served as ambassadors of the Indian community and Indian culture in the world.

This is the first time that the State of Connecticut will be sending the contestants to the national and perhaps international competitions. Considering the fact that Connecticut has one of the fastest growing Indian populations in America, holding this pageant in Connecticut is timely and appropriate.

According to Dr. Thomas Abraham, the Chairman of GOPIO International, there are approximately 50,000 people of Indian Origin living in Connecticut, 15,000 alone in Fairfield County. Of these 4,000 are high-school and college students and 5,000 are professionals who live in Fairfield County and work in Fairfield County, New York City, and Westchester.

This pageant is organized by Diva America Inc., a non-profit organization based in Stamford, Connecticut, dedicated to improving health, education, welfare and opportunities for people of Indian origin in Connecticut. It is a response to the challenges facing young Indian Americans living in Connecticut, who represent rich and distinct culture, which they must reconcile with a dramatically different mainstream American culture.

Proceeds from this event will benefit Asha-Stamford, a non-profit volunteer organization that supports the local community through volunteer involvement and collaboration with local non-profit organizations, and supports the education of under-privileged children in India. Our contestants and winners will be motivated to take up charitable causes. Please show your support of this event by sponsoring, advertising in the event journal and also attending the Pageant on November 8, 2009.
